Every year in October the Pauanui Garden Club have a “Big Day Out”. The destination is a well-kept secret and this year was no different. The bus left Pauanui at 8.30 with the first stop being a leisurely morning tea at Woodturners Café, (near the Hauraki Golf Club). Next the Woodlands Café, Restaurant and Bar at Gordonton, where all agreed the lunch was delightful. We were able to explore the beautiful gardens there, as the weather was perfect. Before returning home it was a quick visit to the Wairere Nursery where a number of purchases were made. Each member received a “goodie bag” which included a packet of seeds generously sponsored by Kings Seeds. However, they did have to earn them by answering some trivia questions.
A very enjoyable day was had by everyone.....where will we go next year??
Garden Club (with a touch of home)
Our 1st get together of the year, started with our traditional picnic meeting. A short shower of rain did not deter the 39 Ladies (including 4 new members) all arrived with a packed lunch/chair and a glass for bubbles to enjoy a relaxing afternoon. The programme for the year was outlined and we look forward to another exciting year.
Our Garden Club now meet on the 4th Monday of the month, as opposed to the last Monday. New members very welcome.
The Pauanui Garden Club held another very successful meeting this month. A large number of ladies enjoyed the mid year Christmas celebration. The President, Jan Cullen, demonstrated how easy it is to decorate the table for your celebration.
The usual competitions had many entries with Julie Snook taking out the prize for Design of the Month, Christmas Bells
At our May meeting we were lucky to have Mary Hull as our guest speaker. Mary (from Waiuku) is President of the Franklin branch of the Fuchsia Society and also vice President of the NZ Fuchsia Society.
The large audience were enthralled with the way Mary pruned the plants she had brought with her. Mary assured us the plants would flourish in the spring even though they
appeared to have had a severe “haircut”. Many of the ladies purchased plants so Pauanui should have some lovely Fuchsias blooming come summer.

During the April meeting the ladies were tested on their knowledge of “smells “with ten different herbs or spices. There was a lot of discussion with the winning table identifying 7 of the 10.
Raffle prize winners were Beth Gifkins, Judy Bearman and Rayna Leslie.
Another very interesting meeting with Nick Aitken as our guest speaker. Nick presented a number of different plants with all their botanical names.
Our Design of the Month ( March Hair/Hare ) was won by Jeannine Cassells with her creation featuring real grass for hair.
The members were invited to bring along a “handy hint” which was very well received.
Next meeting April 24 in the Southern Lounge.
Jeannine with her winning entry in the March Hair/Hare competition.
Guest speaker Nick with some of his plants.
Entries in our monthly competitions.
In October we were invited to join the Whangamata Garden Club for their meeting, the speaker was Linda Hallinan a well-known NZ Gardener and Journalist, thoroughly enjoyed by some 20 of our members.
