August Meeting

The guest speaker at the August meeting of the Pauanui Garden Club was Caroline from Omahu Valley Citrus.

Caroline recently featured on Country  Calendar.

This very talented and interesting lady spoke of her life in Kenya before coming to New Zealand.

We heard of trials and tribulations while perfecting her marmalade recipes which have gone on to win awards in London.

Caroline makes all of their 27 products in small batches to ensure the quality. Her Lemon Vinaigrette was extremely

popular with many members placing orders.

There was once again many entries in the monthly competitions with the winning Magnolias in the foreground.

October  will be the annual “Big Day Out”, where 45 members travel by bus to a surprise destination. Always a very popular and interesting day.

Our July meeting featured “A Touch of Home”. Felicia and Sam from Guthrie Bowron, Whitianga

displayed the many beautiful cushions,  throws and accessories available this season.

Their car was lighter travelling back as a number of articles were purchased by the members.

We also viewed a PowerPoint display of trends for the coming seasons.

Monthly competition for a single bloom was won by Adele with a beautiful Camelia

and the Taste Test taken out by Barbara Pope and Sonia Botica.

Next meeting in the Southern Lounge Monday August 27 at 1.30 p.m.

Another very enjoyable afternoon was held on Monday June 25 with a midyear theme.Committee member Sonia explained some of the more unusual traditions of Christmas around the world. Other members then explained traditions in places they had lived. Everyone then participated in a test of 9 different spices. It was interesting to see how a number of spices do not taste very nice until they are added to food.

The Flavour of the Month competition was won by a Christmas pudding with Brandy Butter

A sumptuous afternoon tea was enjoyed with a delicious Christmas cake made by Adele.

The May meeting of the Pauanui Garden Club featured a “Touch of Home”.

Carla from Armoire (previously known as Trove)showed a very captive audience some of the many lovely products

available in her shop. The most popular item appeared to be the “euro SCRUBBY”. After recommendations from two of the members

they were all purchased. Carla did assure us she had more available.

Monthly competitions were once again well supported with some lovely blooms and fruit entries.

Next meeting is June 25 in the Southern Lounge of the Pauanui Club.

The Pauanui Garden Club held another very interesting afternoon on Monday April 23rd.

The guest speaker was Jenny Smith who showed the group many photos and explained the history of the

Lost Gardens of Heligan. We also heard about the Eden Project a popular visitor attraction in Cornwall.

The project is located in a reclaimed china clay pit and houses thousands of plant species within  enclosures consisting of adjoining domes.

The “Taste Test” section had two winners. An Eggplant Dip and a Feijoa Smoothie.

Congratulations to the winners in the floral section with some magnificent blooms.

Next meeting will be held in the Southern Lounge May 28 at 1.30pm.

The Pauanui Garden Club held their February meeting at the home of Ally Moore. Around 35 members attended the annual Picnic day in the beautiful sunshine, where they were introduced to the new competition schedule for the year.

The monthly competitions now include “Flavours of the Month”.

The committee provided the “products” and 4 members were invited to judge by completing a taste test, with the winner being Colleen Witt.

Everyone was then able to taste for themselves if they wished.

Meetings are held fourth Monday of each month in the Southern Lounge of the Pauanui club at 1.30pm.
