Golf Etiquette

Dress Code

We recognise that Pauanui Golf Club is a beach resort course and a relaxed style of dress should be permitted. As a result, we only require that:

·         On Club Days and Competition Days, players wear recognised golf      attire, including appropriate shoes.

·         On other days, a reasonable level of decorum is followed by players in their choice of apparel.

·          Bare feet are not allowed, as they are detrimental to the Greens  and potentially can be injured.

The Club sets the dress code required for the Club facilities, such as the Lounge and has full and final authority to determine what is acceptable.

Slow Play

Pauanui is a relaxed environment, and most of the time our objective is to have fun and enjoy ourselves. But it is also important to ensure we complete our games in a reasonable time, and more particularly, not to hold up our fellow partners and others on the course. Globally, the biggest bugbear in golf, is slow play. So if there is an empty hole in front and people playing behind and having to wait for us to move on, then we are going too slow. In this case we either call up those behind and have them play through, or we speed up our play.

There are a number of recognised techniques to speeding up our play:

·         Walk faster between shots

·         While waiting for your partner to prepare to play fairway shots, move up the side of the fairway towards your ball, stopping and watching your partner’s play

·         While waiting to play your shot, begin your preparation – distance calculation, club selection, cleaning ball, practice swing, so you are ready to hit immediately when it is your turn

·         Remember, you only have 3 minutes under the Rules of Golf, to look for a “lost” ball

·         When finished on the green, don’t stop to write up the score, but immediately go to the next tee box and write the score up then.

Divots and Pitch Marks

·         Please replace divots on the fairway. If you take a chunk of fairway with your iron or wood, walk forward, pick up as much of the divot you can find, replace it in the hole and press it down with your foot.

 ·         On the tee boxes, please fill in your divot holes with sand from the sand boxes provided. Please add sand to other divot holes while you are there.

·         Always carry a Pitch Repairer on the green and repair pitch marks. Pull the sides of the pitch mark together, rather than lifting up the centre. Please look around the green and repair other pitch marks while waiting for others to putt out.

Greenkeepers/Volunteers

·         Please give way to workers on the course, they have right-of-way. Do not hit up while they are in range

·         Respect markings on the course, such as GUR signs (compulsory lift off)

Respect Others

·         Remember, we are not professional golfers playing for $1million a round. We are here to have fun, so follow the rules, but be polite, respect each other and don’t take life too seriously

·         Treat the Golf Shop staff with courtesy, remember they have multiple jobs to do at the same time

Rules Governing Play

All Club competitions shall be played under the following rule conditions:

1.      The Rules of Golf

2.      Local Rules as they appear on the score card

3.      Temporary Local Rules as they appear on the Notice Board or announced prior to the start of play by the Club Captain.

Common Forms of Competition

These notes are only intended to assist the golfer in understanding how various golf competitions are played, The Club Captain will determine the conditions under which a competition is to be played

1.      Stroke

The score at each hole is entered on the score card, totaled and the player’s full handicap deducted.

2.      Par/Bogey

The score is entered on the card in the same way as in Stroke play.

After entering the stroke score on the card, the result is marked in the column provided with a “+” sign for a win, a “0” for a half and a “-“ for a loss.

At the end of the round, the plus and minus signs are added and the net result written in as so many “up”, “down” or “square”.

The player having the highest number of net “ups” is the winner.

A player is allowed full stroke handicap and the strokes are taken at holes as indicated on the score card.

3.      Stableford

The player takes strokes at holes using full handicap and score points for the net result of each hole. At the end of the round, all points are added up and the player having the highest number of points is the winner.

In scoring, after allowing for handicaps, a player who score par receives 2 points, for a bogey (1 over par) 1 point, for a birdie (1 under par) 3 points, for an eagle (2 under par) 4 points.

4.      Foursomes

Two players play as partners and use one ball. The partners hit off alternatively from the tee and thereafter play alternatively during each hole.

Scoring is done as for a Stroke round and the total is subject to a deduction of half the partners’ aggregate handicaps. In Canadian Foursomes, both players tee off each hole and then decide whose tee shot will be used and then play alternatively.

Hole in One Policy

Conditions for payment of Subsidy for Shout:

The Hole in One subsidy is met from both the PSRC Golf budget and the Golf Club budget. The Target Hole on the Pines is not an officially recognized hole therefore a hole-in-one does not qualify for subsidy or certificate.  A subsidy of up to $250 is available for members shouting on achieving a Hole in One providing the following conditions are met:

1. The player must be a full financial member of the Pauanui Golf Club.  (NB This excludes visiting members and Junior members although they will receive a certificate.)

2. The Hole in One must take place on a course operated by a NZGA affiliated Club during an official Club competition, including our Lefties Fun days.  The player must be playing with a member of an affiliated Club. A signed card must be produced as proof of achievement.

3. If the “shout” is given at Pauanui, payment will be by means of a voucher on the Club bar.  No cash refund will be given if the cost is less than $250.  The person who has scored the hole-in-one is responsible for controlling the dispensing of drinks up to the $250. If it has been given at another club the member will be reimbursed in cash with the amount spent up to $250. (Proof of the amount spent is required, e.g. bar slip). The validity of a Hole in One claim must be approved by the Match Committee before the subsidy is paid.

4. If a Hole in One is achieved outside of a Club competition day a certificate only will be presented (i.e. no voucher issued).

5. All players achieving a Hole in One during official club days will be entitled to a small trophy with the ball mounted on it.  This is conditional upon the player surrendering the “Hole in One” golf ball to the Golf Club Committee.
